Fan advice from the guy on the ladder
TheFansPro is a small, independent review site with one subject: ceiling fans. No 40-category “best of everything” lists. Just fans, tested and picked by someone who installs them for a living.

I’ve spent 15 years as a contractor, and somewhere along the way I became the guy everyone calls about ceiling fans. Garages, nurseries, 8-foot condo ceilings, screened porches on the coast — I’ve hung fans in all of them, and taken down plenty that should never have been bought.
That second part is really why this site exists. Most fan reviews online are written from spec sheets by people who’ve never held a wobbling blade at the top of a ladder. I write the version I’d tell a friend.
How picks make it onto this site
- Install experience first. If I’ve hung it, you’ll read what happened. If I haven’t, I say so and lean on verified specs and owner feedback instead.
- Real numbers, not adjectives. CFM, motor type, watts and sizes get quoted only when they can be verified. If a manufacturer doesn’t publish a number, we don’t invent one.
- Stock-checked links. We periodically re-verify that every recommended product is actually buyable, and we retire discontinued models instead of letting dead links rot.
- Honest cons on every product. No fan is perfect. Each review says who should skip it.
- Updated, and dated. Guides show the date they were last updated, and big changes are noted in the text.
How evidence is labeled
Installed: Ryan has installed or removed the model and can speak to fit, noise, wobble or control behavior from the job.
Bench-checked: a feature or measurement was checked directly outside a customer installation.
Spec-verified: CFM, watts, lumens, dimensions or ratings came from a current manufacturer sheet, certification record or live product listing.
Owner pattern: a repeated failure or complaint appears across enough owner reports to affect the recommendation.
We do not call a fan “tested” when it was only compared from a listing. When evidence is missing or contradictory, the number is omitted and the uncertainty is stated.
The scorecard used on buying guides
- Airflow: CFM and CFM per watt, with room size and mounting height in context.
- Light: verified lumens, color temperature and whether the LED is replaceable.
- Low-speed behavior: motor sound, control steps and the speed most people actually sleep under.
- Installation: bracket design, canopy room, wire access, downrod options and realistic install time.
- Ownership: warranty, replacement controls, app dependence and the parts most likely to fail.
